On the 26th of April 2025, PhD students: Deep Bhattacharya and Gayandi Ekanayake, Project Coordinator, Prof. Alireza Fazeli, and Knowledge Transfer Coordinator, Sébastien David Langui represented our research group at the Maamess 2025 exhibition - one of the largest agricultural fairs in the Baltics. As part of the Estonian University of Life Sciences collective booth, alongside several other university research groups, we engaged with farmers, industry professionals, and the general public to showcase the innovative work taking place at our university.
We presented research from the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences, focusing on the potential of extracellular vesicles (EVs) to advance animal health, food safety, and sustainable agriculture through a One Health approach. Our highlighted projects included:
Disease Detection in Cattle: Developing non-invasive methods using EVs from milk and feces to detect pathogens such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, and to monitor conditions like insulin resistance, supporting early diagnosis and improved herd health.
Transforming Food Waste into Health Solutions: Isolating EVs from vegetable and algal waste to identify bioactive compounds that enhance cognitive ability, promote muscle growth, and contribute to human and animal health, turning agricultural by-products into valuable resources.
Embryo-Maternal Communication: Investigating how EVs mediate communication during early pregnancy, offering new insights into reproductive health and enhancing fertility diagnostics for both veterinary and human medicine.
Visitors showed great enthusiasm for learning how EVs or these tiny biological messengers, can connect human, animal, and environmental health. We also highlighted our participation in the OH-BOOST European network, working to advance One Health diagnostics across Europe.
Taking part in Maamess 2025 gave us a great chance to share our research with the community. We were able to show how important innovation, teamwork, and sustainability are in everything we do.
