Best Practices in Microbiota Research - Best Practice Transfer From the University of Helsinki

On September 26th, 2024, the OH Boost Project hosted a webinar titled “Best Practices in Microbiota Research,” featuring experts from the University of Helsinki and the University of Tartu. The event attracted significant attention, bringing together researchers and professionals from the field of microbiota science to discuss state-of-the-art methodologies and practical applications in microbiota research.

Dr. Mikael Niku from the University of Helsinki started the session with a thorough introduction to 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and its role in analyzing microbial compositions. His presentation outlined key steps in sequencing and data analysis, including techniques for avoiding data contamination and ensuring the accuracy of results. Dr. Eveliina Hanski followed with practical advice on sample collection, storage, and processing. She highlighted the importance of minimizing contamination and using preservatives to maintain sample integrity.

The second half of the webinar included talks by Dr. Antti Karkman and Dr. Radko Avi, focusing on metagenomic sequencing, its application in studying antimicrobial resistance genes, and the analysis of the virome in human fecal samples. Dr. Karkman’s session covered short- and long-read sequencing technologies, including Illumina and PacBio, while Dr. Avi concluded with insights on how virome research is advancing our understanding of viral populations and their interactions with the human microbiome.
