One Health Center Welcomes New Zealand University Delegation  

On 24–29 May 2026, a delegation of New Zealand university representatives visited Estonia at the invitation of the Rectors' Council, with EMÜ among the institutions on their itinerary.

At EMÜ, guests heard presentations from senior academics on the university's key research areas. Professor Alireza Fazeli, Director of the One Health Centre (OHC), introduced the delegation to the Centre and to the One Health concept, using the occasion to lay the groundwork for potential future cooperation. The programme also included laboratory tours in areas where EMÜ's expertise aligns well with New Zealand research interests — including plant biology, forest science, algae research, and biorefining.

Despite the geographic distance between the two countries, the meetings revealed a striking degree of alignment in scientific priorities and values. Professor Fazeli was particularly encouraged by the strong interest shown by New Zealand colleagues in interdisciplinary research and the One Health framework. Discussions pointed to promising opportunities for cooperation on topics such as the health of humans, animals, plants and ecosystems, food security, biosafety, and responses to climate change. Participants also explored ways to engage New Zealand researchers in Horizon Europe projects.
