Study Visit in Milan: Exploring Milk EVs and One Health Approaches

From April 24th to May 15th, 2024, PhD student Madhusha Prasadani Yasalath Gamage from the Estonian University of Life Sciences undertook a study visit at the University of Milan. The focus of the visit was to explore the effects of cow milk extracellular vesicles (EVs) on various cell types in a 2D system. The goal was to study functional properties such as cell growth, viability, and proliferation. Based on these initial studies, Madhusha worked toward developing 3D cell culture models that could serve as substitutes for animal models, focusing on porcine and rainbow trout intestine models.

During her visit, Madhusha had the opportunity to collaborate with researchers from the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences. She conducted experiments on the effects of milk EVs on intestine fibroblast and epithelial cells and tested how these EVs impacted the recellularization of intestine fibroblast cells on decellularized bio scaffolds. The modern research facilities at the University of Milan, such as the Center for Stem Cell Research and the University of Milan Dairy Farm, provided an excellent environment for conducting these studies.

The University of Milan’s focus on both human and animal health through in-vitro models aligns with global efforts to reduce the need for animal testing in scientific research. Madhusha plans to apply the knowledge gained during her visit to further her studies in the One Health field, particularly in developing innovative models that bridge veterinary and human health research.
